Gold And Diamonds: Immigration

East Broadway Dept: Jewellers' windows gleam with flamboyant gold and diamonds. On Mott St., the spine of Chinatown, a giant gold Buddha sits in a storefront converted into an incense-filled temple. Stores overflow with animal parts and herbs that fill shelves, jars and bins. Restaurants offer unfamiliar tastes and smells. Steep stairways lead to mysterious shops, according to Montreal Gazette. Today, Manhattan's Chinatown has the largest concentration of Chinese in the hemisphere, with a population estimated at 150,000 in the area bounded by Lafayette, Worth, Grand and East Broadway and manhattan's Chinatown is shabby but not drab. Red and gold, hot pink, orange and lemon yellow jostle for attention. Some other immigrant groups that came to the United States in large numbers generations ago are now assimilated, but Chinatown's immigrant history is still happening. When the U.S. Congress finally ended all national-origin restrictions in 1968, Chinatown's growth really took off. As reported in the news.
