Supreme Court Of Canada Dept: In a unanimous decision Friday, the court said financial responsibility lies with the sponsor, but the government should be flexible when it comes to repayment schemes, according to Montreal Gazette. Under federal immigration laws, sponsored immigrants are not permitted to receive social assistance payments. Their sponsor - who is financially responsible for a family member for three years after they arrive in Canada - is deemed to be legally responsible to repay the improperly obtained debt and the Supreme Court of Canada has upheld the right of the federal and Ontario governments to recoup social assistance payments made to new immigrants.
