Milos Dept: But this is a holiday night. And, outside the resto, it's a parking lot on the aptly named Park Ave. Construction -which the city figures will last a few years, which could mean a decade -has reduced the road to one lane in each direction and has created perpetual gridlock and headaches for motorists. Even pedestrians have to be agile enough to hurdle the myriad obstacles preventing them from entering their destinations of choice, according to Montreal Gazette. This goes a long way toward explaining why Costas Spiliadis, the Milos mastermind, founder and empire-builder, is smiling. He has accomplished the nearly unthinkable on the local restaurant scene. Milos, with its minimalist, crisp-white Mediterranean decor, has not only flourished since opening here 30 years ago, but Spiliadis has been able to parlay that success on a grander scale, having ta York City and Athens by storm with operations that require reservations weeks in advance and milos is packed this evening. No surprise there. Milos, unarguably Montreal's most renowned Greek restaurant, is always packed for dinner. And lunch and late night noshing, too -thanks in large part to a moderately priced menu in the latter two instances. Yet, clearly, when the tummy hankers for Milos, nothing will deter the diehard. Now, that's how success is defined in the rough-and-tumble resto trade. As reported in the news.

Vancouver Sun Dept: Now a new study out of Montreal has more discouraging news for adult immigrants hoping to cash in on the promise of a new land, according to Vancouver Sun. "The earlier in life immigrants arrive, the more their academic paths will resemble those of their Canadian-born counterparts, and the easier it will be for them to master one of the official languages in Canada," said Maude Boulet, one of the study's authors and an expert in industrial relations at the Universite de Montreal and for years it's been a common complaint among newcomers to Canada that the lack of recognition of foreign credentials, including schooling and job experience, has held them back in the labour market. The Institute for Research on Public Policy has found that, even with postsecondary education from a Canadian institution, newcomers who arrive in Canada over the age of 18 are more likely to be underemployed, or even unemployed, than both their Canadian-born peers and those who come to the country at an earlier age. As reported in the news.

Eastbound Train Dept: Early Tuesday, in reply to a question from prosecutor Marg Creal, Mr. De Oliveira’s lawyer, Ian Kostman, stood and told Ontario Superior Court Judge Nancy Backhouse that “This is not a whodunit; identification is not an issue.”, according to Globe And Mail. He is pleading not guilty to three counts of attempted murder and three of assault; Mr. Kostman has the onus of showing that Mr. De Oliveira isn’t criminally responsible by virtue of his as yet-unspecified mental health issues and there is now no question that, about 19 months ago, on a February Friday the 13th, a then 47-year-old man named Adenir De Oliveira pushed two teenage boys, and tried to push a third, into the path of an eastbound train at the Dufferin subway station. The sole question to be determined by the judge, who is sitting without a jury, is whether Mr. De Oliveira was so mentally ill when he pushed the boys that he was incapable of appreciating what he was doing or that it was wrong. As reported in the news.

Zelenka Dept: Two of his friends had already been pushed over, into the path of an oncoming train, according to The Star. Within minutes, TTC gate operator Russell Cormier bum hip and all was labouring in pursuit of the attacker, giving chase down Dufferin St., huffing and puffing with a cellphone to his ear, making the 9-1-1 call and antony Zelenka teetered on the edge of the subway platform, nudged three times in the back, taking one small step forward to maintain his balance. A woman was shrieking in the background; other witnesses, horrified, clasped hands to their heads in disbelief. As reported in the news.

Terrence Knox Dept: Knox, a former Chicago police officer, has written to Minister of Public Safety Vic Toews to ask that he be considered a possible murder victim for a shooting back in 1969, according to The Star. The reason, Knox argues, is that Freeman killed him and it s tough to extradite accused murderers from Canada and terrence Knox suspects he s a murder victim. He s just not dead yet . In his letter to Ottawa, which he copied to Immigration Minister Jason Kenney, Knox urges Canadian authorities to refuse a temporary residence permit to Gary Freeman, a former librarian s assistant at the Toronto Metro Reference Library, who shot him 41 years ago in Chicago. As reported in the news.

Documentary Filmmaker Dept: I told him, I went to this amazing place called Angel Island and he said, I was there. It was a prison, a jail, said Wong. He never wanted to talk about it so I never knew, according to The Star. Ellis Island under the silhouette of the Statue of Liberty is more famous as the gateway to America for European immigrants. But Angel Island in San Francisco Bay was for decades the entry station for arrivals from Asia where nearly one million immigrants were processed, opening at a time a century ago when anti-Chinese sentiment was at its highest and aNGEL ISLAND, CALIF. Documentary filmmaker Eddie Wong thought he had discovered something unusual to show his father when he went to Angel Island in 1971 and took footage of the abandoned former immigration station in San Francisco Bay. For tens of thousands of American-born Chinese, the history of their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents can be traced to one side of an island five kilometres from San Francisco. As reported in the news.

Electoral debates can be a decisive moment in a campaign when you realize that something is happening. I remember the two televised debates during the 1995 campaign and the manner Bernard Lord personified his slogan Time for Change facing his opponent Camille Th riault, who looked tired, hesitant and carrying 10 years of the McKenna government and chedly Belkhodja is a political science professor at the University of Moncton. Liberal Mp Dept: A leaked Aug. 5 note signed by French Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux's chief of staff called on police to clear 300 camps within three months, and that "Roma camps are a priority.", according to Vancouver Sun. "This document proves France is engaged in a premeditated attack by expelling the Roma en masse," said Dosanjh, a former federal health minister and ex-B.C. premier and a Canadian politician embarking on a mission to Europe to "shame" the French government over its expulsion of Roma migrants said Monday that the release of an internal document is "smoking-gun" evidence the action is illegal. The French government has always denied it is targeting a specific ethnic group, which would violate European Union law. Liberal MP Ujjal Dosanjh said it is "smoking-gun" evidence to the contrary. As reported in the news.

Jason Kenney Dept: So it's no surprise that Immigration Minister Jason Kenney has been musing about imposing new mandatory minimums for human trafficking, according to Vancouver Sun. It's been almost a year since the Ocean Lady arrived in British Columbia carrying 76 Tamil migrants. No one involved in that voyage is facing trafficking or smuggling charges. As for the more recent arrival, the Sun Sea, the RCMP is still reportedly trying to sort out the perpetrators from the victims -- if, indeed, that's an accurate way to characterize the relationship between the passengers and whoever took their money and this Conservative government has never encountered a law-and-order problem that it didn't want to solve with mandatory-minimum sentences. It's a facile answer to a complicated problem, a way to score political points and look tough. But there's precious little reason to believe that mandatory minimums would make the slightest bit of difference. We can tinker with sentences all we like; it's moot if the offenders never see the inside of a courtroom. As reported in the news.
