Canada Dept: Heather Mallick s well-written piece on the changes to the refugee system in Canada hit the nail on the head. The Conservative attitude on this issue is more about keeping refugees from Canada, period, than dealing with the imagined problem of abuse of our system, according to The Star. What attracts real refugees to Canada is not that we are a country ripe for abuse, but rather that we have created, moreso than any other country in the world, a country that is accepting of any religion or ethnicity, a country that does not judge people by their skin colour or their beliefs or their political party. I am proud that we have created such a welcoming place and re: Canada s razor wire playground, Dec. 15 Immigration Minister Jason Kenney said, If people are in a region of the world where they need refugee protection, they should go within their region to seek protection from the UN or another country. They should not pass through three transit countries and then bypass 40 others in order to come to Canada. This sentiment was repeated by others in his caucus.
