Desperate Lives Dept: Your editorial naively suggests that the Interim Federal Health Program paid for the care of 128,000 refugees last year at a cost of $84 million which is surely not too much to care for people who are fleeing desperate lives of torture, violence or rape, according to The Star. We are facing a big global economic downturn and Canada is no exception. Must we not at this time tighten our collective belts in order to tide over this economic hurdle? It is right to cut some of the benefits that refugees enjoy when our seniors and out of work Canadians are suffering. Many of my reliable sources, who have close interaction with refugees, say that the vast majority of refugee claimants are trying to jump the queue illegally and are taking advantage of our rather lax border control mechanisms.
