Devon Clunis Dept: This morning, Winnipeg Police Service Supt. Devon Clunis released statistics at council's protection and community services committee which show violent crime has declined city-wide between 2009 and 2011. Data shows violent crime dropped by nine per cent from 2009 and 2010 and dropped by a further eight per cent from 2010 and 2011. Clunis said the number of assaults dropped by three per cent from 2009 to 2010 and a further nine per cent between 2010 and 2011, according to Winnipeg Free Press. Last month, Smith called on the Winnipeg Police Service to examine three years' worth of stabbing data to find out how many have been reported, how many have been solved and the number of victims who refuse to co-operate with a police investigation and police have told a city committee that violent crime is on the decline in Winnipeg. Clunis released the data in response to a request from Coun. Harvey Smith Daniel McIntyre who said stabbings have become an "epidemic" in Winnipeg.
