Pressure Cookers Dept: The need to find a compromise is urgent because our schools are becoming pressure cookers that could explode any time. The search for compromise cannot be based on contradictions and lack of clarity, according to The Star. With a provincial election around the corner, this is a perfect opportunity to force politicians to tell us how they will cope with the problem. But, unfortunately, that s not going to happen in light of the fate of former Ontario Progressive Conservative leader John Tory, who lost an election because he promised to give all faith-based schools access to taxpayer funding just like public and Roman Catholic schools and the relationship between the education system and religion is difficult. Religion should stay out of schools, but when the school system becomes a repository for all the tensions in our society, the two have to survive together. Most of all, it cannot be left in the hands of local administrators like those in the Toronto District School Board who allowed Muslim students to preach in their school cafeteria. Locally, that decision makes all the sense in the world, but such decisions must be made within provincial guidelines, not in a vacuum. As
reported in the news.
