Heat Waves: Immigration

Coffee In The Morning Dept: Howie pounded out what came to 2.1 marathons a day for 72 days against headwinds and without coffee in the morning or a cold beer at night - raising $527,400 for what is now the Elks and Royal Purple Fund for Children, according to Vancouver Sun. These days, Howie is no longer a marathoner. At 65, he has lived for the past six months at Duncan's Sunridge Place care facility although he hopes he'll be independent enough to leave one day. "I kind of think I deserved better," muses the man who in some way exemplifies the loneliness of the long-distance runner and it was 20 years ago, on June 21, 1991, that Al Howie took the first stride on his awe-inspiring 7,356-kilometre run from St. John's, N.L., to Victoria. Through mind-frying heat waves, ravenous mosquitoes and Rocky Mountain highs, the 45-year-old from Duncan set a national distance record that has never been topped. "Although we have benefited from the incredible feats by individuals committed to our cause over the years, this effort by this person remains outstanding," notes Elks charities coordinator Agnes Fuchs. As reported in the news.
