Calgary Herald Dept: "We've reviewed the science and it's abundantly obvious that there is a causal relationship between the fact firefighters develop a number of cancers at a rate more prevalent than that of the general population," said Employment and Immigration Minister Thomas Lukaszuk, according to Calgary Herald. Manitoba is the only other province that offers presumptive coverage for as many types of cancer. Last spring, the province added testicular and esophageal cancers to the list of illnesses presumed to be work-related. In the year since, four esophageal cancer claims by Alberta firefighters have been accepted by the WCB and the province has added four more types of cancer to its list of occupational illnesses for which firefighters will receive presumptive coverage. Prostate, breast, skin and multiple myeloma round out a total of 14 cancers that will be presumed to be work-related by the Workers' Compensation Board as long as a minimum exposure period is met. "When they do develop that cancer, we want to make sure they focus on healing, focus on recovery and focus on treatment and not having to substantiate to the Workers' Compensation Board which fire or which agent it may have been, was it work-related or not. It's impossible to prove it in each individual case substantively." As
