Winter Olympic Games Dept: British Captain George Vancouver, who first explored and mapped the inner harbour of Burrard Inlet and other areas of the West Coast in 1792, could not have envisioned the busy yet bucolic metropolis named after him. From logging outpost, to railway terminus, to gold rush supply depot, Vancouver's development marks the milestones in the history of the Pacific Northwest. Today, it stands among the world's great cities, according to Vancouver Sun. What sets it apart are the qualities many take for granted: Health care services, the education system, cultural offerings and the environment. Infrastructure built for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games added facilities that won favour from the Economist's adjudicators and had they been less stout-hearted, survivors of the fire that destroyed most of Vancouver two months after the city was incorporated 125 years ago might have seen it as bad karma and settled elsewhere. But four days after the inferno, the city began to rise from the ashes - and what a city it has become. For much of the last decade, Vancouver has dominated the Economist Intelligence Unit's world's most livable cities list, ranking No. 1 for the last five years. As
