Ostensible Reason Dept: Fran oise David is right when she says that the Tories have ignored women's rights in regard to abortion, ironically, for all the wrong reasons. The recent private member's bill that she refers to, known as Roxanne's Law, would have made it a crime for a third party to coerce a woman to have an abortion. It was named after Roxanne Fernando, a 24-year-old Winnipeg immigrant who was beaten to death by her boyfriend and two male accomplices because she refused to have an abortion, according to Montreal Gazette. It might surprise David to know that coerced abortion is a human-rights violation, one which has been condemned by Amnesty International. On the other hand, elective abortion is neither a human right nor a Charter right. It simply isn't illegal and re: "Quebecers don't share Harper's Tory values" Opinion, March 31 . Stephen Harper and many of the Conservatives voted against the bill, ultimately defeating it. The ostensible reason was that the Criminal Code already covered coercion. However, the Conservatives didn't say how the law should be enforced to protect a woman's right to continue her wanted pregnancy. As
reported in the news.
