Conservative Parties Dept: From the old, established working-class areas of New Westminster -a traditional NDP stronghold -to the middle-class villas and expensive new subdivisions of Coquitlam where the Conservatives draw much of their strength, the riding seems designed to be forever fickle, according to Vancouver Sun. Over the last 35 years, the electoral boundaries of New Westminster, Coquitlam and Port Moody have been in flux with various permutations and combinations. The present boundary was settled in 2003 and combines the eastern part of New Westminster, the southwestern part of Coquitlam and the southern part of Port Moody and as constituencies go, the boundary lines of the New Westminster-Coquitlam riding, which includes a large piece of Port Moody, encompass as disparate a collection of voters as are likely to be found in any British Columbia federal riding. Since 2006, it has been held by the NDP, but for the 12 years before that it was held by the Reform/Conservative parties, with some of those triumphs being close-run races. As
reported in the news.
