Conventional Wisdom Dept: They examined cheating in sumo wrestling, the effect of legalized abortion on the reduction of crime in U.S. cities and the economics of the drug trade. Several of their studies looked at the conventional wisdom and turned it on its ear, according to Montreal Gazette. They question the wisdom of punting on fourth down, offer proof that officials are biased in favour of home teams, look at the reasons why home teams have the edge, stress the importance of a superstar to a winning team and take on the conventional wisdom that defence wins championships and economist Steven Levitt and journalist Stephen J. Dubner produced one of my favourite books of the past decade when they wrote Freakonomics. Another economist-journalist pair -Tobias Moskowitz of the University of Chicago and Sports Illustrated's L. Jon Wertheim -have taken a similar approach to sports in their book, Scorecasting Crown Publishing $30 . As
