Quebec Legislature: Immigration Minister

Sikh Religion Dept: The opposition Parti Qu b cois is seeking to introduce a motion forcing the provincial government to prevent Sikhs from carrying their ceremonial daggers into the national assembly building, according to CBC. That response was far less enthusiastic than the offerings of the opposition, which saluted the work of parliamentary security guards and declared that multiculturalism was not a Quebec value and in the Sikh religion, it is forbidden to remove the kirpan, which is kept against the skin under clothing. The dispute over Sikh kirpans is expected to resurface in the Quebec legislature Wednesday. The Charest Liberals said very little when four Sikhs were barred from the building in January because some refused to surrender their kirpans. Immigration Minister Kathleen Weil would only say, at the time, that institutions were entitled to set their own security rules. As reported in the news.
