City Recreation Dept: That s what the immigrant kids at Jane and Finch had in mind when they asked the city to let them host a community skating party at a nearby rink this Friday. They re teenagers from Somalia, Cambodia and Afghanistan learning English, navigating their new city on the TTC and figuring out the mechanics of yanking the laces so firmly around the ankles of their rental skates that their fingers go numb, according to The Star. Still, the city s recreation department did what it does best. It said no and skates. Rink. Hot chocolate. Marshmallows over a wood fire.
