Immigration: Amy Sky

Timely Introduction Dept: Thanks to rocker Amy Sky's timely introduction of Toronto's Mark Masri to American adult contemporary/easy listening star Jim Brickman, Masri has become that craziest of anomalies in Canadian music: He's better known in the United States than he is here, according to Montreal Gazette. Not that it was such a big stretch: Brickman and Masri share similar classical music backgrounds and the same love for easylistening pop. Earlier this year, Masri released his first EMI-backed album, La Voce, in which he's singing in no fewer than six languages. One track features a duet with pal Sky and every week, we offer free downloads of music by Canadian indie artists. This week, check out songs by Mark Masri and nine other artists at www. montre a l gaze t t e . c o m / theplaylist. Torontonian Sky is a big-time songwriter and, one day, she had Masri come in and record the demo on a song she thought might suit Brickman. Upon hearing it, Brickman asked about the demo singer and, faster than you can say "fortuitous turn of events," Masri became part of Brickman's road family. When you're an indie artist, that kind of exposure is very nice for CD sales out at the merchandise table. As reported in the news.
