Passport Information Dept: There is nothing to prevent the U.S. from sharing the data expansively within its own country and abroad, the privacy commissioner warned the Commons transport committee on Thursday. "They have the power to share it widely.", according to Vancouver Sun. Stoddart's assessment of the policy contradicts the assertions of Public Safety Minister Vic Toews, who told the committee earlier this week the information collected on Canadian passengers is intended to be used solely to protect aviation security and the government should push the United States to quickly destroy information it will begin collecting in the new year on all airline passengers flying through American skies, Jennifer Stoddart says. Stoddart said there is nothing in the new Secure Flight policy -- an antiterrorism measure being imposed on all airlines flying over the U.S. -- that precludes the Department of Homeland Security from sharing passenger names, birth dates, and genders, passport information and travel itineraries with immigration and law enforcement authorities at home and abroad.
