Still in pain and with steel pins in both legs, Marupov, now 22, waited anxiously for the arrival of his parents, brushing aside attempts at conversation and the last time Moira and Rauf Marupov saw their son, he was a healthy 21-year-old on his way to an adventure in Canada. Barely a month after his arrival from Uzbekistan, Marupov suffered terrible injuries to his legs and back in a 13-storey fall from a Toronto construction scaffolding that killed four others on Christmas Eve.
