canadian flag: The sun came out just in time for the kids to unroll the flag for an audience of trustees, principals, teachers and community members, marking a successful project that started in Calgary, according to Brandon Sun. In October, Youth Revolution was chosen by West Jet Cares for Kids to attend We Day in Calgary, and about 13 Vincent Massey students flew to the festivities. Youth Revolution students from Vincent Massey High School and J.R. Reid School unveiled their custom designed Canadian flag on Tuesday, decorated with visual reminders of the different acts of citizenship they took part in together. While we were there, Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi was onstage and he said to the whole stadium, I really encourage all of you to do acts of citizenship in honour of Canada's 150,' and it really resonated with our group, said Patricia Redekop, Vincent Massey teacher and Youth Revolution teacher-leader. We talked about reconciliation, youth, environment, diversity and inclusion and what that all means, Redekop said. The students decided to pair up with their neighbouring school, J.R. Reid, walking over every couple of weeks to partner with the younger students and talk about what citizenship means. (www.immigrantscanada.com). As reported in the news.

mavis otuteye: Pallister said the President Donald Trump's crackdown is driving people to sneak across the border and risk their lives, according to Brandon Sun. We need to address the root cause of this ... the desperation people clearly are feeling combined with the hope they feel as they pursue a better life and come from the United States to Canada and to Manitoba, Pallister said Wednesday. Mavis Otuteye, 57, was found roughly one kilometre south of the border near Noyes in a remote part of northwestern Minnesota. In the absence of any rational arguments to persuade people, they tend not to change their mind. Pallister also said the federal government has not listened to his request to talk to immigrant communities in cities such as Minneapolis to dissuade people from making the journey across fields and ditches into Canada. I haven't any evidence that our federal government has attempted to persuade the president of the need for him to change his approach. (www.immigrantscanada.com). As reported in the news.

sherpa climbers: But the high-risk expedition, financed with about 92,000 from the Indian state of West Bengal, has sparked heated debate in the mountaineering community about the morality of risking more lives to retrieve bodies from one of the most unforgiving places on Earth, according to Brandon Sun. It was a very dangerous operation, West Bengal state official Sayeed Ahmed Baba acknowledged. The body had been left on the mountain for a year until last week, when a team of Sherpa climbers managed to recover it along with two others. It was difficult to find Sherpas who were willing to go. On the helipad Sunday in Kathmandu, Debashish Ghosh felt relief as he watched the Indian team unload the three bodies from the back of the chopper. But we had to do it for the families. leon: Instead, her family wound up in an unheated house in Oregon with no indoor plumbing, eking out a living by picking strawberries, according to Metro News. It is all the more remarkable, then, that Alonso Leon became one of the first people brought to the U.S. illegally to become a lawmaker in America when she was elected last November to Oregon's Legislature. Teresa Alonso Leon envisioned a better life in a promised land when she was brought from Mexico to America as a young girl. Alonso Leon's victory shows that human potential does not know immigration status, and that among America's immigrants, especially those who have come here as children and benefited from the right to education, their potential offers leadership for the country, said Arturo Vargas, executive director of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials. We didn't get our woman president that we were hoping for, but they got me as a legislator, Alonso Leon said with a laugh in her small office in the Oregon Capitol. The irony that Alonso Leon was elected the same day that Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton is not lost on her. (www.immigrantscanada.com). As reported in the news.

atlantic canada: For Atlantic Canada, there should be one intent get as many highly-talented Americans as possible to move to the region, as soon as possible, according to Hamilton Spectator. I'm not talking about dozens or scores of Americans, but rather thousands of educated, skilled, ambitious Americans whatever their political stripes. Encouraging this migration should be the key element of a Canadian strategy shaped by Americans' uneasiness about the administration of President Donald Trump. There's no shame in being explicit about Canada's intention. The Americans themselves profited over the last century economically, scientifically and culturally from the immigration much of it targeted of thousands of brilliant minds from unstable regions and countries. The smartest countries in the world led by Singapore and Israel operate on this logic constantly. (www.immigrantscanada.com). As reported in the news.

tax havens: Since 2013, Cyprus has had a program that allows people to invest large amounts of money in the country in exchange for citizenship that gives them a passport that can be used to travel throughout the European Union, according to CTV. Now, there are concerns that foreigners are taking advantage of the program to park their money offshore, gain access to a passport that allows them travel easily across Europe, and avoid the prying eyes of their own governments. But in Cyprus, it can be as easy as shelling out some cash. Many countries in the world provide residency in exchange for investment, and many others are used as tax havens, such as the Cayman Islands and Panama. In three months, even without stepping a foot onto the island, you can actually become a citizen, Onaran told CTV's Your Morning from New York Tuesday. But Yalman Onaran, a senior writer at Bloomberg News who recently investigated the Cyprus program, says what makes that country unique is how quickly it will issue a EU passport in exchange for money. wage hike: A community worker raised concern over how other service providers would have to pick up the slack, according to Toronto Star. A legal clinic executive wondered if the financial cuts disproportionally fell on refugees rather than family and criminal services. CARLOS OSORIO / TORONTO STAR FILE PHOTO By Nicholas Keung Immigration reporter Tues., May 30, 2017 Legal Aid Ontario got an earful from attendees at public consultation this week focused on its 40 per cent cut to refugee legal services.A private lawyer questioned how legal aid justifies the cut when 300 of its staff made the province's Sunshine List with a wage hike last year. But one thing was clear no one liked any of the three options offered by legal aid to address its 13.1-million funding shortfall in 2017. The whole situation is a disgrace, said Marjorie Hiley, executive director of the Flemingdon Community Legal Services, who called in during the consultation at legal aid's Toronto headquarters, one of 11 sessions over three weeks before the service cuts kick in July 1. The service reduction for refugees is part of the Legal Aid Ontario's effort to save costs and balance a 26-million budget deficit. (www.immigrantscanada.com). As reported in the news.

african americans: They openly make a reference that they are African and the others are black people, according to Huffington Post Canada. When I lived in the United States, I noticed that Caribbean people have a belief that they are better than African Americans because their culture is more connected to Africa. There are some people from Africa that believe they are different than people from the Caribbean. Some African Americans are less likely to have an interest in Africa or the Caribbean culture because their culture was taken from them by force during slavery. I have heard the stories of new African immigrants ridiculed by black people born in North America that have left some resenting those that were born here.
