Nicholas Keung Immigration: Order this photo By Nicholas Keung Immigration reporter Fri., June 17, 2016 Roua Alkadi had gotten used to the deafening sound of bomb blasts as she sat in class at Damascus University, according to Toronto Star. But when the growing conflict in Syria made it too dangerous even to attend class, she dropped out of her studies in accounting and joined the exodus of people fleeing the country. She is the winner of a scholarship that will enable her to attend Ryerson University, where she plans to study biomedical engineering in September. For many young Syrians, leaving their war-torn country has meant suspending if not ending their education completely — and shelving dreams of a career and bright future. I applied to Ryerson University in February and got a conditional offer, but I had no idea how I was going to pay for my tuition, said Alkadi, one of six scholarship recipients set to attend a Canadian university this fall under the 100 Syrian Women, 10,000 Lives scholarship program offered by Jusoor Canada. But thanks to a new post-secondary scholarship program for Syrian women, a door has opened for Alkadi to resume her education in her adopted home of Toronto. (www.immigrantscanada.com). Olivia Ward: On Thursday, a report by the UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria said that Daesh — also known as ISIS and ISIL — is seeking to destroy the Yazidis in multiple ways, as envisaged by the 1948 Genocide Convention, according to Toronto Star. It left no doubt that the atrocities perpetrated against thousands of Yazidi women, children and men since the group invaded Iraq Sinjar region in August 2014, belonged in the worst category of crimes in human history. By Olivia Ward Foreign Affairs Reporter Thu., June 16, 2016 The conclusion is stark and damning: ISIS has committed, and continues to commit, the crime of genocide, as well as multiple crimes against humanity and war crimes, against the Yazidis. The report came two days after a Tory-sponsored parliamentary motion to declare the assault on the Yazidis and other minorities genocide was defeated by Liberal MPs. And he insisted that Canada is taking the lead in rescuing the beleaguered minority, who have been persecuted for centuries in the Middle East as devil worshippers. Foreign Affairs Minister Stéphane Dion, who opposed it, said Thursday that the government is now convinced that Daesh is conducting genocide against the Yazidis. (www.immigrantscanada.com). UBC geography professor David Ley SFU sociology professor: Yan has mapped the rapid rise in home values and recently authored a controversial study analyzing home purchases in one Westside neighbourhood, according to Vancouver Courier. The Globe and Mail reports that UBC geography professor David Ley and SFU sociology professor Josh Gordon will also be at the meeting. Andy Yan, an urban planner and acting director of SFU city program, confirmed his attendance. In his book Millionaire Migrants, Ley documented the link between rising home prices and wealthy Hong Kong immigrants who sought a safe haven prior to reunification. It a markedly different set of voices than the provincial government has been consulting. Josh Gordon published a paper this spring arguing that based on existing academic work, there can be no doubt that foreign capital is playing a big part in Vancouver housing market. federal Liberals: They say the pressure is mounting, though not only because of money, according to The Waterloo Record. As five of the 15,412 government-assisted refugees resettled by the federal Liberals since November, they receive a year of income support and there a while yet before that money runs out. What none of them have is a job. What is at stake right now is feeling like they belong in the country they are now calling home. "It getting depressing," said Mahmoud Al Ahmad, 46, through a translator. Labour Party: Police would not speculate on the attacker motive, but Clarke Rothwell, who runs a cafe near the scene of the slaying, told the BBC and Britain Press Association that the assailant shouted Britain first! several times, according to Toronto Star. Police did not confirm that account. Jo Cox, a 41-year-old Labour Party legislator who praised the contribution of immigrants to Britain and championed the cause of war-scarred Syrian refugees, was attacked outside a library in Birstall, northern England, after a regular meeting with constituents. Witnesses described a man shooting Cox several times and then stabbing her as she lay on the pavement. : This is the priority, according to Metro News. Conservative Jason Kenney, who has spent weeks urging the government to put the genocide label on ISIL, says Dion is missing the larger picture by focusing only on the Yazidis."This genocide affects more than the Yazidis," Kenney said."It affects the other indigenous minorities of Mesopotamia. Dion said Thursday he accepts the findings of the report of an independent, UN-mandated commission which says the militants known variously as ISIL, ISIS and Daesh have committed genocide against the ethnically Kurdish minority group."We are taking the lead in asking the Security Council to be sure that they will prosecute the perpetrators of these atrocities and investigate in order to understand what is happening on the ground," Dion told the Commons."In the meantime, we have tripled our effort to fight ISIL on the ground, because we need to rescue these populations. United Nations Security Council Veteran Tory: Dion said the federal government is again calling on further, urgent action from the United Nations Security Council, according to Huffington Post Canada. Veteran Tory MP Jason Kenney said it was unfortunate it took the "stubborn minister so long to realize the facts that have been staring the world in the face." Shortly before voting against the motion Tuesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told the House of Commons that the determination on what is or is not genocide must be done objectively by the UN, not partisan politicians. Foreign Affairs Minister Stephane Dion confirmed the position in question period Thursday, two days after Liberal MPs voted against a Conservative motion that sought to label ISIS atrocities with the same term. "Today for the first time, an independent report by the UN Commission has concluded that genocide was committed by the so-called Islamic State against the Yazidis," Dion said. "Given this evidence, our government believes that genocide against the Yazidis is currently ongoing." This undated file image posted online on Jan. 14, 2014 shows ISIS fighters marching in Raqqa, Syria. Four Liberal MPs strayed and voted with Tories, New Democrats, and Bloc MPs in supporting the motion. The report summary states: ISIS has sought to destroy the Yazidis through killings; sexual slavery, enslavement, torture and inhuman and degrading treatment and forcible transfer causing serious bodily and mental harm; the infliction of conditions of life that bring about a slow death; the imposition of measures to prevent Yazidi children from being born, including forced conversion of adults, the separation of Yazidi men and women, and mental trauma; and the transfer of Yazidi children from their own families and placing them with ISIS fighters, thereby cutting them off from beliefs and practices of their own religious community, and erasing their identity as Yazidis. The report from the UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria, based on dozens of interviews with survivors, summarizes in graphic detail the "ongoing genocide" against the Kurdish-speaking religious community of 400,000 people at the hands of ISIS. Testimonies included recollections of mass killings and the sexual slavery of women and girls. (www.immigrantscanada.com). As reported in the news.

: One can almost see the Republican Party backroom boys gathering in a smoky den and reading their candidate the riot act: If you want to be president, You have to lie to the American people, according to Toronto Star. So what American voters will likely get from now on is a white-washed candidate, who will not reveal his true agenda, nor reveal the type of presidency he would offer; in effect he is being asked to sell his big lie. Trump has resisted up until now. Article Continued Below Not that he is any stranger to lying, which the press shows he has done frequently during the primaries. At this point, if it happens, I suspect that the people who will be most disappointed with his presidency will not be the people who voted against Trump but those who voted for him.
