Student Representative Assembly and De Caire

appointment: They did, however, manage to make it clear through a protest and letters in The Silhouette student newspaper that this appointment was unwelcome, according to Hamilton Spectator. Since then, many groups on campus have been working together on a petition to "get De Caire off campus." In recent weeks, the Student Representative Assembly voted to endorse this petition and The Silhouette published a full cover story detailing the events. As the appointment was announced late in December, during the exam period, there was little time for students to mobilize ahead of his first day on the job. De Caire has been a controversial figure in Hamilton for years. He was also one of the architects of the Hamilton Action Teams which have been accused of targeting residents in the downtown core and paving the way for the gentrification responsible for raising housing costs and pushing people out of their homes. He has made no bones about being an active supporter of carding, or "street checks," which target racialized, aboriginal, and poor people disproportionately. (www.immigrantscanada.com).
