baby boomers: In contrast to the millennials—who are children of baby boomers, Gen Z-ers have inherited from their Gen X parents a sense of insecurity, says Eddy Ng, a Dalhousie University professor who studies generations in the workforce, according to The Chronicle Herald. Ng says Gen Z-ers are also the first generation to be raised in the era of smartphones and social media, meaning many don’t remember a more unconnected world in which one couldn’t be in conversation with anyone anywhere any time. Known also as post-millennials, Gen Z-ers have grown up with the war on terror and the Great Recession. Meanwhile, for many members of this demographic, same-sex marriage is less of a controversial political issue than an entrenched legal right. In late 2015, global research and advisory firm Universum surveyed 49,000 members of Gen Z across 47 countries throughout America, Europe, Asia, South America and the Middle East, exploring respondents’ plans for school, work and careers. And they’re more likely than any preceding generation to have social circles that include people from different ethnic groups, races and religions.
