Billboard: Three men had come and gone in the previous nine years and the directors wanted stability as well as musicianship, according to Hamilton Spectator. Several applications were received but no candidate seemed a good fit so it was decided to buy a small ad in Billboard, the major North American music magazine. The Waterloo Musical Society was hunting for a new bandmaster. Thousands of musicians read Billboard and at least one responded to: "Bandmaster wanted for small town in Ontario, Canada." Charles Frederick Thiele was only 34 years old, quite young for such a responsible position. While working for prominent New York music publisher Carl Fischer, Thiele had met the two greatest band leaders in the United States: John Philip Sousa and Edwin Goldman. But in those 34 years, Thiele had already played in or led a band for 14 of them.
