federal budget: That on top of $678 million over six years set aside by the Liberals in November when they rolled out a plan to resettle 25,000 Syrians in total by the end of last month, according to Hamilton Spectator. The actual current estimate for the program is higher. Tuesday federal budget provided an additional $245 million over five years to bring in the remaining 10,000 people needed to meet the Liberal promise to resettle 25,000 government assisted Syrian refugees by the end of 2016. Recently tabled government documents peg it at $698 million, which the Immigration Department says takes into account the full $100 million the Liberals have committed to the UN for its role in getting Syrians safe haven in Canada, and elsewhere. As of March 20, 26,202 Syrians have arrived in Canada since the Liberals took power in November. The original budget only accounted for $10 million of that contribution.
