Barbara Miller Nix: The YMCA Homework Club has had to move to the Keshen Goodman Public Library because the demand for the program has tripled in the last couple of months, according to The Chronicle Herald. Barbara Miller Nix, chief operating officer of the YMCA says the partnership with the library has been great as both parties have a desire to help immigrant families and their children. YMCA of Greater Halifax and Dartmouth, for one, has accepted the challenge with open arms. The weekly Homework Club, established in 1992, offers students in junior and senior high school the support for schoolwork and helps the children foster friendships. It really is just a community of sharing and learning and bringing the skills to the kids. Some of them are working in their notebook, some of them on computers, and they’re practicing speaking if they can, Miller Nix says.
