Pregnant women, seniors, even young children, were among those affected. The cuts to the Interim Federal Health Program left many refugees living in Canada without access to important health services. After more than 50 years of providing health coverage, Canadians were expected to believe this was no longer a wise or responsible thing to do. Canadian Doctors for Refugee Care organized cross-country rallies to protest the cuts and won the backing of more than 20 national health organizations. In May 2012, shortly after the cuts were made, I was asked to provide communications support to a group of volunteer physicians who first drew public attention to this issue.
