refugee protection: Mohammad family had fled Syria for Egypt, and when Mohammed permit expired, rather than risk deportation to Syria, his parents did what any parent would do: try to protect their child, according to Toronto Star. Mohammed flew to the U.S. and then presented to the Canadian border to make a claim for refugee protection. But indeed, this is how Canada Border Services Agency treated the arrival of this unaccompanied and vulnerable youth. Unaccompanied minors may claim asylum in Canada, even if they have travelled through the United States, but due to a technicality, the CBSA officer who greeted Mohammed deemed him ineligible to claim refugee status, and promptly sent him to immigration detention. In truth, hundreds of innocent migrant and refugee children find themselves in immigration detention centres each year in Canada, as do thousands of adults. If only Mohammed were an exceptional case.
