Syrian Refugees and Deputy Chairman

: While the efforts to bring Syrian refugees to the country have been successful, the handling of immigration in general has not, argues McKenna, the deputy chairman of TD Bank Group, according to The Chronicle Herald. It is not a Canadian success story at present in terms of widespread distribution; 70 per cent of all immigrants now go to the three major cities, and we only get 2.5 per cent of immigrants in Atlantic Canada, so we are not receiving our fair share of immigrants, he said in an interview Monday. This, according to former New Brunswick premier Frank McKenna, is a program that would direct immigrants to settle in Atlantic Canada in return for permanent resident status, all in hopes that people ultimately stay, addressing the region population problem. Given the aging demographic and out-migration facing the region, McKenna said it time for a special deal with the federal government. He said his idea could be similar to what happened with the Dutch following the Second World War or when land grants were given to people to help settle land across Western Canada when the railway was being constructed. We’re really a canary in the coal mine for the rest of Canada, and unless the government of Canada does something that would designate immigrants to go to our region, our population will continue to decline in spite of the best efforts of our governments … to try to use the current rules to get a bigger share of the immigrants.
