Dickens

: Although the group was predominantly women, a few men names were recorded early on, according to The Chronicle Herald. After spending five years focused on Dickens, the organizers decided to draft a constitution, broaden the focus of the group and change its name. It all started in 1889, when four teachers formed a Dickens reading circle for the purpose of studying the works, life and times of Dickens on a regular basis. They selected Kritosophian based on a Greek word meaning council of the wise. It also outlined that the club would meet 10 times a year on the second Tuesday of the month , with one annual general business meeting a year on the fourth Tuesday in March.
