Immigration Officials and Private Groups

refugee numbers: A total of 60 sponsorship groups had offered their services as of last week, according to The Chronicle Herald. But although refugee numbers are still up in the air, the quality of the welcome that Syrians will receive here is not. Provincial immigration officials have said that some 20 to 30 private groups in the province will sponsor refugees, most of whom will have family members here. For Nova Scotians have, predictably, outdone themselves in stepping forward to welcome people left homeless by a devastating four-year civil war at home. The 60 community and church groups across the province are similar to the Bay Refugee Project, which grew out of parents’ conversations about the Syrian refugee crisis as they dropped their kids off at school. Most refugees bound for Canada have already been registered with the UNHRC and are in refugee camps in Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey awaiting referrals. (www.immigrantscanada.com).
