Canada and Syrian Refugees

: Thanks to our Oct. 19 election, Canada is now taking in 25,000 Syrian refugees, despite initial — and very un-Canadian — opposition based on suspicion, racism and fear, according to Toronto Star. Once again, I am jarred by our failure to learn from history. It has rained before. Have we not been through this before If Canadians could recall the last time the world saw such convulsion and mass flight, maybe they would be universally more generous. Canada did not distinguish itself. In 1945, the Second World War had just ended, millions of people were lost in Europe, and those who could not return to their home countries were begging for food, shelter and a plausible destination.
