: In Ottawa, police have asked Muslim women to report abuse cases after a string of attacks there, according to Toronto Star. And here in Toronto, a 30-year-old woman, Safira Merriman, was physically assaulted at Fairview Mall near Don Mills and Sheppard as she tried to enter a drugstore with her two young children. Of the many forms this intolerance has taken, one is particularly troubling: While other communities have seen a significant decline in hate crimes, the Muslim community is seeing a dramatic increase. While the xenophobic mood is undoubtedly spreading, I know well that it is not new to our country. My parents, sister and I had recently immigrated to Canada after the Islamic revolution of 1979. Thirty-five years ago, in that same Toronto suburb, four newly arrived Iranian immigrant girls were tied to trees and taken hostage in the back of their apartment building.I was one of those girls.
