Mike Savage and Halifax Transit

: Liberals change refugee plan schedule Nova Scotia wants more details from Ottawa I really believe that there comes a time when you have to look inside your soul, collectively and individually, and say, ‘What do we do, what do we owe people who are suffering ’ Mayor Mike Savage told reporters, according to The Chronicle Herald. He spoke after council voted in favour of the plan. The plan presented to council Tuesday includes 12 initiatives aimed at helping integrate the Syrian refugees who are expected to arrive on these shores over the next three months. Among the items in the plan: Halifax Transit will offer temporary transit passes to refugees in the first year of resettlement; refugees will be offered relief on recreation fees at the 28 Halifax Regional Municipality-owned and operated facilities, and the city will encourage other multi-district and community facilities to do the same; and officers will organize outreach sessions with refugees to help overcome any fear of police they may have as a result of their personal experiences. The city, through the Local Immigration Partnership, will also work with service providers and settlement agencies to help secure temporary emergency shelters. The city human resources department and the diversity and inclusion office will also provide sensitivity training for municipal staff who deal with the public to address stigma and stereotypes.
