John McCallum: But the government announcement that only 10,000 will arrive by Dec. 31 was not a surprise, according to The Chronicle Herald. The rest are to arrive by the end of February and Immigration Minister John McCallum has indicated that another 10,000 could arrive next year, bringing the total to 35,000. Before the Oct. 19 election, the Liberals had pledged to bring that many refugees to our shores by year end. Even before the Nov. 13 terrorism attacks in Paris, the government had promised proper security, health and other checks for this group of soon-to-be Canadian residents. Vetting people and readying places for them to stay in Canada takes time and planning. The Liberals admit the Paris attacks prompted a slowdown, with security and health checks to be done in Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey rather than after arrival in Canada.
