: Equally unknown to most Canadians is that the No. 2 or Black Battalion was trained and led by 17 white officers, according to The Chronicle Herald. The formation chaplain was a black Baptist minister, thus rounding out the total of 18 ranking officers. In the past 25 years, much has at last been said about the Black Battalion and a great many volumes of literature have been written about them. Remembrance Day 2015 Our award-winning Great War project Regrettably, such tribute has been directed solely toward telling the stories of the black serviceman in the ranks, with little acknowledgement of the feelings and challenges of the 17 white officers who commanded them.
