Birth Certificates and B.C. Human Rights Tribunal

: The complainants say it is not possible to tell a person gender at birth and it is discriminatory to include sex on birth certificates, according to Globe and Mail. They say an incorrect gender marker can cause difficulty and distress. Eight transgender and intersex people have filed complaints against the province at the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal. This is a catch-all ASF view; only displays when an unsupported article type is put in an ASF drop zone The province has said it would prefer to continue listing sex on birth certificates and denied the process is discriminatory. However, a briefing note prepared for B.C. Health Minister Terry Lake in July – and recently posted to the provincial government website after a freedom-of-information request – says Passport Canada and the Insurance Corporation of B.C. have told the province they could accept a birth certificate that did not mention gender, although there are some caveats.
