visual arts: On Nov. 28, Qamar will speak at Shame, Shame, a visual arts showcase featuring new works by Qamar and artist Babneet Lakhesar and is meant to explore the shame that youth who are first- and second-generation South Asian immigrants feel when they realize they want a career in the arts, according to Toronto Star. It takes place at CTC West, a South Asian bridal store at 12 Ossington Ave. at 6 p.m. The Toronto-based pop artist work has gained a following across the globe — her Instagram account, where she uploads her artwork, has more than 22,000 fans fond of the inside cultural jokes she posts. The irony, given the event venue and theme, isn’t lost on Qamar. I moved to Canada from Pakistan in 2000. After all, she tells the Star in her own words that Hatecopy was born out of her struggles to accept her identity as an immigrant and an artist:It very recently that I have stopped pretending to be someone else.
