Scottish immigrants: Among my ancestors are Scottish immigrants who left Scotland and travelled under horrible conditions to come to this country, according to The Chronicle Herald. After having their livelihoods in Scotland taken away from them, they were desperate to reach any haven that would allow them to lead a more normal life. Canada is a land of immigrants and their descendants. The Scots were only one of many similar waves of immigrants to come to Canada. How, then, can our federal government, many of whose officials undoubtedly have stories similar to mine somewhere in their families’ histories, be so callous in their treatment of the current flood of refugees Are they so mercenary that they are beyond showing compassion for their fellow man Considering how they have treated their own citizens by nickel and diming them with program and/or spending cuts, for the sake of being able to show a government surplus during an election year, I feel that that is probably the case. The parallel with the current refugee crisis is obvious.
