Carl Stephenson: Humans are, by nature, nomadic, according to Toronto Star. Our very first migratory urges were born out of the need to find food and, as the source of food migrated with the shifting ebb and flow of the Earth climate, so did early homo sapiens. The origin of every single one of us can be traced back to the majestic Serengeti Plains of Africa, including every indigenous culture. We are all intrinsically migratory descendants, an ancient genetic web of brothers and sisters. Just as the ants — despite incomparable odds — in Carl Stephenson classic 1937 short story, Leiningen Versus the Ants, march incontrovertibly toward, and over, Leiningen fortified plantation, crawling over the dead bodies of their fellow ants, so too does man. Whether humanity is fleeing the ravages of despotism, religious or sexual persecution, famine, war or the innate urge to find a better life, for many, the ability to remain stationary is fleeting.
