Kitchener Duke Street post office: Last week, Flash from the Past looked at Guelph Dominion Public Building, recently repurposed and restored by Wellington County, according to The Waterloo Record. Like Guelph, Kitchener Duke Street post office was among numerous federal buildings erected under the guidelines of the R.B. Bennett Conservative government 1934 Public Works Construction Act. But for 20th-century architecture enthusiasts, the Great Depression left a legacy of stunning buildings. In both Kitchener and Guelph, outdated 19th-century post offices were being replaced but the real motive was what today we call infrastructure funding. Kitchener was getting anxious — nearby cities such as Guelph, Galt and London had all recently received new federal structures. The immediate result of job creation was soon outstripped as the Second World War put an end to unemployment: the enduring result was a string of impressive buildings across Canada.
