: An additional 8 million find themselves displaced within the country itself, unable or unwilling to go abroad, according to Toronto Star. Many are exceptionally young, and have experienced little but the trauma of violence, dispossession, and displacement. Since 2011, when the conflict began, over 4 million people have fled Syria. For the most part, Syrians who have managed to find refuge abroad have done so in neighbouring countries. Lebanon has taken in more than 1 million — a staggering figure equivalent to roughly a fourth of its entire population. Turkey alone hosts some 2 million, and is now home to more refugees than any other country in the world.
