: We were a generous and quiet nation, a nation of peacekeepers, loved by all the world, according to The Chronicle Herald. We didn’t think we were really all that important on the world stage. When I was a child it was called Dominion Day and I don’t remember any particular celebration, except maybe a little quiet time to think about what a great country we had. We were content with our low profile. What has happened to us Why do we need junk food, cheap little paper flags and expensive displays of firecrackers to proclaim pride in our country Did our true pride falter when we ceased to be a nation of peacekeepers, loved by all the world, or has it withered as we watch boats full of refugees that are no longer welcome on our once-welcoming shores Or does the need to erect gigantic monuments signifying our supposedly supercharged patriotism actually conceal the fact that we are losing something simpler and more precious Like a fisherman enticing the hungry codfish with a handful of pogey, our government hands out free cake, trinkets and noisemakers, hoping that we will feel content or safe or patriotic or something. We were a modest nation.
