: In the civic realm, attention was focused on the Pan Am Torch Relay, according to The Waterloo Record. And that may be just as well. So I was glad to see an important milestone in that process — the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo on Thursday — mentioned, at least, in these pages, on the radio, and online in the University of Waterloo Daily Bulletin. There may be no intrinsic significance in the connections between Waterloo, the Battle, the City, the University and the County/Region, any more than there is in the old gag book title Lincoln: the Man and the Car . What in a name is whatever you choose to make of it. It has come to signify defeat: hubris – arrogance followed by nemesis. Waterloo the battle was a decisive victory for Wellington and Blücher as well as Napoleon last stand, but the name has been associated primarily with the latter.
