British army: Commonwealth soldiers used it in two world wars and beyond, according to The Waterloo Record. Lee was the Galt-raised inventor who designed its hand-powered bolt. You might have heard of his namesake, the durable Lee-Enfield rifle. When the British army adopted his design in the late 19th century, it produced the new rifle in its Enfield arms factory, calling it the Lee-Enfield. Now with spare parts harder to find, the government is hiring Kitchener Colt factory to replace it. It has proved so reliable in all weather that Canada still arms its Arctic soldiers with models built in 1950.
