New Product Development Boot Camp: The idea is to bring people with differing perspectives together to create new products and potentially new opportunities, according to The Chronicle Herald. Working in space dubbed the IDEA Waterfront Design Studio, located between the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 and NSCAD Port Campus, 18 students, six from each of the disciplines, formed teams with the goal to commercialize a concept. Although it might sound like the beginning of a bad joke, the New Product Development Boot Camp, which has design students from NSCAD University working with engineers and business students from Dalhousie University, is very serious. While not all the ideas are going to result in a new product or business, Glen Hougan, an industrial designer and associate professor at NSCAD, says one of the main purposes of the boot camp is to expose participants to new ways of addressing issues. The same goes for the designer, who will need to address whether the design is feasible. The engineer may solve a problem one way, but they have to take into account the business aspect.
