Liberal Party and Wade Mac Lauchlan

election campaign: Wade Mac Lauchlan capped his first major election campaign on Monday by pulling off one of the toughest acts in politics -- he ran against his own government record, and won, according to Winnipeg Free Press. The Prince Edward Island premier led the Liberal party to a third term, winning 18 of the legislature 27 seats after weeks spent distancing himself from allegations of conflict of interest and cronyism that dogged the administration of his predecessor, Robert Ghiz. Rookie politician Wade Mac Lauchlan has led his Liberal party to a majority victory in Prince Edward Island, where voters decided Monday to grant a third consecutive term to a government repeatedly accused during the campaign of undermining public trust. And while the Liberals lost two seats from their pre-election standings and a hefty chunk of support -- the party popular vote of 41 per cent was 10 points lower than that in the 2011 election -- the defeat of Mac Lauchlan main opponent gives him plenty of breathing room. While his party raised its seat total to eight from three at dissolution, its popular vote also declined. Progressive Conservative Leader Rob Lantz, a former Charlottetown city councillor and another newcomer to provincial politics, lost his bid for a seat in the legislature by 24 votes.
