Colon: Until October, Colon was a prisoner of the Mexican legal system, where he says he endured neglect, prejudice and brutal physical and psychological torture at the hands of officials, according to The Chronicle Herald. Thanks to the efforts of human rights organizations, he was freed, his coerced confession of organized crime involvement thrown out. But for five years, he was trapped in a nightmare. Now he trying to enact change in a country where torture happens all too often, according to a human rights lawyer who now working alongside him. Colon decided in 2009 to leave his native Honduras for the United States to improve his financial situation. Colon, 38, is in Halifax this weekend to share his story with human rights activists and supporters at Amnesty International Canada annual general meeting.
