Controversial Changes and Unpaid Internships

unpaid interns: Theoretically, this is to enact the budget, but for years, it has been used as an omnibus vehicle to pass a large slew of sometimes controversial changes, according to The Chronicle Herald. Here are some elements of the bill that go beyond spending and tax code changes: Unpaid Internship Rules The budget promised to offer more protection for unpaid interns and define the rules for when such internships could be offered, but it gave no details. The government tabled its Budget Implementation Act on Thursday. The act will amend the Canada Labour Code to spell out exactly when unpaid internships can be offered. No Gun Registry Questions The federal gun registry may be dead, but the government is making sure there are no more questions about how it was killed. Unpaid work is allowed where the worker is receiving school credit or if the following conditions are met: •The intern cannot replace an employee. •The internship is not a prerequisite to future employment and the employer is not required to offer employment. •If the work is full time, the internship cannot last for more than four months. •If the work is part time, the internship can last up to a year, depending on how many hours are worked. •Benefits derived from the work activities must accrue primarily to the person performing them. •The employer must supervise the intern.
