caregivers: She is two years older than Amy and frequently experienced isolation as a child trying to cope with her sister illness, according to The Waterloo Record. Now as an adult Mathers thinks it is important to shed light on the plight of young caregivers like herself. Amy had a liver transplant at five, a heart transplant at 22 and lost some mobility in between. "She has been ill her whole life," Mathers said. Mathers is the chair of the Young Carer Project, a community collaborative that offers support to young people providing care to a family member. Young caregivers have a range of responsibilities from emotional or financial support to assistance with physical care. The group was formed in 2009, but recently developed new resources to help local agencies provide support to young caregivers in the region. "It all about educating young carers and teaching about how other services can support them," Mathers said.
