Winter Carnival

: It our way of rewarding people for not littering, says Sabina Ali, chair of the Thorncliffe Park Women Committee, according to Toronto Star. Ali and her committee started the annual winter carnival in the local R.V. Burgess Park seven years ago as a way of encouraging residents of the largely immigrant high-rise community to enjoy some quintessential Canadian fun.A group of teens organize a game of for the younger children. Everyone who brings back their empty Styrofoam cup gets a raffle ticket for one of four family season passes to the Ontario Science Centre. Toronto parks department has set up a warming fire and staff members from the local library read stories and hand out colouring books. Isn’t the weather perfect says Ali, shaking snowflakes from her peach-colour hijab. A young woman dressed as Franklin the Turtle, the popular children book and TV character, poses for photos.
